2023 site-responsive work + guided walk and sound offering ceremony
For three weeks in June the Succurro Collaborative (currently made up by Alex Goldberg, Julia Heck, Owyn Ruck, and myself, Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda) gathered on the land at Succurro, in residency –– trading sessions every day, practicing periods of deep inquiry, and carrying out site-responsive projects that emerged out of a year of collective research and support of one another’s practices. Most importantly, the ongoing process of ‘getting out of the way’ — the surrendering of individual stories, assumptions, and expectations of what it means to create art and be an artist.
On Saturday, June 24 we opened Pathways — the evolving exhibition of artworks made here on the land, coinciding with the Solstice Feast.
In my work, I was led to a magical site along the trails, where another ‘energy drawing emerged’. I gathered materials from around the land (bailing twine, old barn nails, herbs, sounds), listening to the space and all that lives there, and making offerings mostly in the form of sacred smoke, and sacred sound…
