weaving the waters, weaving the river, weaving the stones, weaving ourselves (offering / live weaving in/to the Piedras River)

My first conscious encounter with the Piedras River was an act of recognition, offering, and love: I offered tobacco and a song to the water, and water from my eyes flowed. Since then—and this being the only river in San Juan, where I live—I felt the call to deepen my relationship with this body of water: to know it better and open myself to what it can stir in me and in us if we sit with it.
Through visits to its basin—its source, streams, and channels—I made offerings, observed its movements, its qualities, wove its waters, prayed over them, and also collected trash that became woven objects to offer sound.
Although this project-process is part of a long-term investigation into and with other bodies of water, in this phase, I presented a ceremonial action as the closing of my micro-residency with the Puerto Rican Arts Initiative (PRAI).
I convened a space-time of communion, listening, and reciprocity with/among the waters, all the forms of life that are/exist in the river, and the bodies of water that we also are.

Mi primer encuentro consciente con el río Piedras fue un acto de reconocimiento, ofrenda y amor: ofrecí tabaco y un canto al agua, y agua de mis ojos brotó. Desde entonces —y siendo éste el único río en San Juan, donde resido— sentí el llamado a profundizar en la relación con este cuerpo de agua: conocerlo mejor y abrirme a lo que puede mover en mí y en nosotrxs si con él nos sentamos.
A través de visitas a su cuenca —su origen, quebradas y canales— realicé ofrendas, observé sus movimientos, sus cualidades, tejí sus aguas, las recé, y también recolecté basura que se convirtió en objetos-tejidos para ofrendar sonido.
Aunque este proyecto-proceso es parte de una investigación a largo plazo sobre y con otros cuerpos de agua, en esta fase, presenté una acción ceremonial, como cierre de mi micro-residencia de performance y artes efímeras con la Puerto Rican Arts Initiative (PRAI).
Convoqué a un espacio-tiempo de comunión, escucha y reciprocidad con/entre las aguas, todas las formas de vida que son/están en el río, y lxs cuerpxs de aguas que también somos.
