Shared Practice Sessions
December 2017 – January 2018, Beta-Local, PR
The first phase of this project was in Puerto Rico, and it developed in a very organic way. I set up an ‘open studio’ situation at the balcony of Beta-Local while I worked on finishing my piece SOL, and during some sessions, I invited the public to accompany me at work. There were guidelines, or what could be called a ‘score’: moments delineated for the beginning, middle, and end of the work/ritual sessions, and the rest was an improvisation in response to the elements present (who arrived, the weather, our interaction, the time available, etc…). There was/is the intention to explore the themes of sacred spaces, transformation, the passing of time, artisanal work, and our inner/outer worlds. We shared in silence and exchanged impressions at the end.
Almost all of these sessions were carried out around the tasks necessary to finish a soft sculpture for my installation SOL. In parallel to the sessions in the studio, I was visiting / re-visiting craftswomen / weavers on the island and deepening my knowledge of these traditional techniques and my relationships with my teachers.
